His research focused on the “history of state-sponsored residential segregation in the United States.” In addition, he worked as a national education columnist for The New York Times for a decade from 1999 to 2002. Rothstein is also a frequent lecturer on issues such as equity, race, and education, among others. He was previously a senior fellow at the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, until the institute's closure in 2015.
