She had a lifelong desire of visiting Africa and seeing animals in the wild. Goodall started working as an assistant to paleontologist and anthropologist Louis Leakey. In 1960, she set up camp in the Gombe Stream Game Reserve (which is now a national park) in order to study the behavior of chimpanzees in the area. She stayed in Gombe until 1975.
